I was driving around Simcoe and Muskoka to check out a couple of favourite spots. The drive up Hwy 400 was pleasant as there were very few cars mid-week. I get that sense of excitement when you see Georgian Bay off to the left as you drive by Waubaushene. I know that I live by the bay and it is stunningly beautiful, but I can only imagine how those from the city must feel when they see that first glimpse of water.
You notice changes in the landscape into the Canadian shield, rock cuts along the highways, rock outcrops and the small rocky islands in the Bay - part of the 30,000 Thousand Islands and Georgian Bay sland National Park
I stopped at Port Severn, which is a lift lock on the Trent-Severn Waterway System
The Trent Severn is 360 kms (approx 200 miles) canal system along rivers, 44 lift locks that connects Lake Ontario, through Peterborough, Orillia up to Port Severn and into Georgian Bay.

After spending some time enjoying the day and walking along the water enjoying the sunshine, I headed north to Muskoka Road 38, drove east through the Wahta Mohawk reserve into Bala - a favourite place to relax, and wander around. It was so pretty and very quiet. Unfortunately Don's Bakery, home of the best chelsea buns, was closed. :(

Lake Muskoka flows into the Moon River which flows into Georgian Bay. There are several fall in Bala, but the prettiest, AND most photographed (and is on many blogs) is Bala Falls.

And one more photo for now ;) I am very pale as it is, you know that pasty white English complexion, but this bright sunlight sort of washes out the face and covers all the wrinkles ;) hahaha

These are terrific shots Deb...and the colors are awesome. The area in which you live, is just lovely.....you're a lucky duck!
ReplyDeleteThanks for celebrating Bala!
ReplyDeleteJust to vent: folks across the way had their spotlight on until well after 1:00, firing firecrackers at 10:30, which stopped. But the music kept up until 1:00.
We are powerless. It takes police 45 min, at least, to get here, then they need a boat as it is boat access only...yikes.
What exactly is a chelsea bun, Deb? You're the only person I know that talks about chelsea buns. Are they an ON thing? I know I could google, but I'd love to hear from you :-)
ReplyDeleteAwesome pics. Lake Muskoka looks so serene in that one pic. I love it. Just discovered your blog today and I'm enjoying reading about your experiences at the cottage. I recently started blogging about my cottage country life too. Feel free to check it out. http://www.islandgirltalk.com
