Happy Vicki Day! Firecracker Day! Holiday Weekend.

The Victoria Day holiday weekend is our (un)official start of summer. It is also the usual cottage opening weekend and all the highways out of Toronto are jam packed with traffic as people escape to their little pieces of heaven on earth to get ready for summer. It is the celebration of the monarch's birthday, which is great. I mean ANY reason to celebrate and have a long weekend is just fine by me. Today so many people are moving here, and so many cottages are winterised that a lot of people start as early as Easter weekend or continue weekend visits all winter long..

The kids call it the May 2-4 weekend after that cultural icon, the case of 24 beer, Molsons, Labatts, a local micro-brewery, whatever...yet another reason for them to get together and celebrate. DON'T Drink and Drive!

As a kid I called it Firecracker Day. I loved coming to the cottage because we could buy fireworks and set them off on the beach. I liked the little ones ..we called them bangers. although there were other names for them. They are dangerous and I don't see may of them around anymore.

I enjoy sitting on the beach watching the fireworks displays around the beach - sometimes 10 or 12 of them. We can also see them across the bay in Wasaga and in Collingwood/Blue Mountain (on a very clear night and they were just teeny bursts in the sky). They go off every night though most weekenders leave to the city to watch displays closer to home.

The hill down into my beach. The photo doesn't do it justice, but the water is a pretty blue with the sun sparkling on it - like a sparkly lake of diamonds.
