As you know, and as I wrotein my previous post, I have been following the Susan Boyle phenomena and enjoy it so much. This lady doesn't own a computer nor knows what youtube is, she is probably not quite aware of exactly what is happening to her.
Now the patronizing, smug, arrogant media types are all agog over her "make over". Good grief people get real......if all of a sudden millions of people were dissecting your every move, and prefaced every so called compliment with "dowdy", "plain", "bushy browed" or described your dress as a "lace doily of a frock" who "clomped on stage", "frizzy faired" - what woman in their right mind would not want to 'freshen' up her looks! This is a hair cut and a bit of a brow wax and a few new 'smart' clothes. She has NOT had a make over with botox, bleaching and gosh knows what! This isn't conforming to the unrealistic expectations placed on women on how we should look. This is a simple, sweet, naive church lady, not unlike many ladies in our neighbourhoods, who took a chance, had the confidence and guts to go on BGT and take a shot at pursuing her dream. So she had her hair done.
The whole thing smacks of sexism and the ageism was blatant from the beginning.
As a single, middle aged, plump, cat lady (okay I have been kissed etc;) lots) who has hair that has forever been the bane of her existence and who will forgo some groceries for a "do" if I have somewhere special to go, who also who took care of her parents, all I can say to the sexist, ageist buffoons is "Bite me".
To Susan - You go girl! Get a new do, some new lipstick, a few new clothes and then sing your heart out and win! Thanks for letting the world know know that even though we may be middle aged (or older) and our eggs may be powdered - we are still worthy!
*off to email Gloria Steinham for a response*
Pssst I still think that Piers Morgan is a cutie ;) He always refers to her as a woman who has talent, charm and appeal and who in unconventional. Bless him.

Girl.....you've said it all beautifully, for "us" the women out there who have never been anywhere near a ten...have faults, and weird hair, and strange habits, and tics, and big butts, and lopsided boobs, and bum knees, and attitudes that need cranked up or down....amen!
ReplyDeleteyou say it sister!!!! great post today!
ReplyDeleteWell said, kindred spirit and practically neighbour!
ReplyDeleteThank you Ladies. You know, it just piffed me off. Sheesh.
ReplyDeleteI have watched and listened to that video countless times, and cried, as much of the world has. I adore Susan. I don't want her exploited, as I'm afraid Simon's PR people might do. I heard say that she had some brain damage from birth, which says why the village children "mocked" her all her life. Everyone says fix her up. I say leave her be. She sings like an angel, and I'm a 52 woman on HRT and a belly and all that jazz too!
ReplyDeleteBrenda
Could not have said it better myself. The Susan Boyle video is one of the most inspiring things I have ever seen. I get chills and tears every time I watch it. I am so happy for this woman and can't wait to see how far she goes. Sadly there are a lot of mean spirited people in this world who are not going to be supportive. Beauty is not just what a person looks like but what's inside as well and more than likely Susan is more beautiful than most!
ReplyDeleteThanks Ladies. And Way to go Susan.
ReplyDeleteI do hope that after all the publicity for the show AND the judges, that Susan gets some type of compensation. :)
I will be waiting to see how she does.
