Hi Blogging Friends
I have been quite busy and neglected my poor blog. I was really enjoying myself and quite pleased that I had started, and kept up with my blog and meeting some great bloggers. I think maybe the January blaghs caught up with me. I had a 'put my mind to the grindstone, get lots of sleep' attitude...but hey it's finally February. That dang groundhog better predict spring soon - not in another 18 weeks!!!!!
So you have Punxsutawney Phil in the northern US and I read there is a General Beauregard Lee Groudnhog in Georgia. Hey, you have to LOVE that name! It's so dignified and well just so so southerm :-) In Ontario we have Wiarton Willie. I am almost proud to say he lives about 60 kms from me, so I have a sort of celeb almost in backyard. On a clear day I can almost see him across the bay.
Wiarton Willie is from Wiarton Ontario. Wiarton is a small village on the Bruce Trail north of Owen Sound.

Willie may be famous but he has had his share of scandals. Apparently the original 'Willie's passed on, so the silly townsfathers (not 'townsmothers' as we know women would NEVER try to pull a stunt like this)decided to have him stuffed - ewwwwwww - and then display him the following spring so all could mourn him. He was in a white tuxedo with coins on his eyes and a carrot in his hands. The original Willie had decomposed, so the corpse was an imposter! This was not even the real Willie (are you following?)
They fools didn't think it through and of course everyone, especially the local children, who were proud of their town's famous groundhog, were upset! Yes the infamous Wiarton Willie scandal.
It's a few years down the road and all I can say is "Willie - make us happy and please predict an early spring but I won't hold my breath".
Wiarton Willie
Wiarton is on the Bruce Penninsula. The Bruce Trail is 800 kms of trails that run along the Niagara Escarpment from Niagara Falls ON to Tobermory On, then it continues underwater through to Manitoulin Island. The dolomite limestone forms stunning cliff along the Georgian Bay shoreline. The Niagara Escarpment is a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.

Hi Deb....So good to hear from you!!! I've been worried you were snowed in!! Yes, our General Beauregard Lee...affectionately known as Beau...has promised us an early Spring!! He has been 94% accurate to date, so we are all excited! What did Wille predict? Have a great week...Debbie
ReplyDeleteHi Debbie :) I am relaxing with a cup of tea and saw Paula Deen on The View after work. She is so funny and so southern, I thought of you :)
ReplyDeleteWell that dang groudnhog saw his shadow and you know what that means :( Aparently he is only right 50% of the time - so maybe soring will come sooner. Around here the snow is pretty much all gone by the beginning of the end of April/beginning of May. March Break is the second week of March and somehow if we get that far, well we know spring is just around the corner.
My cousins, who winter in Panama City beach, say the fruit crops are being affected. Oh no........not my yummy Florida oranges! :(
Have a good evening
Deb
